People have in fact done a lot of experimenting over the past decade with moving fantasy out of easily-recognizable late first millennium Europe, but again, if all you're doing is renaming the countries, what's the point? For a long time I have wondered why I don't really care for the fantasy genre, but I think the excessive focus on medieval times has a lot to do with it.
